Learn about me

Kulvir Singh Virk was born in Cardiff, UK, in 1965. He has a home in Cardiff but regularly works away as a freelance architect all over the world.

In his work as an architect, Kulvir designs spaces in which people can work, live and play. His role also incorporates elements of public safety and project oversight, and his input is vital at every stage of a building’s construction – from the initial concept to the opening ceremony upon completion. There are three main stages to an architectural project: design, documentation and construction.

Working process

During the design phase, Kulvir will work with a client to create a detailed design to bring their concept to life. At this stage, Kulvir will need to ensure compliance with all building and safety regulations and local planning regulations and restrictions.

In the documentation phase of a project, Kulvir will produce a range of detailed drawings and use technology such as CAD as part of coming up with the design. There could be multiple revisions required at this stage. Construction documents then need to be drawn up that translate the design into technical specifications and instructions that will be needed by the contractors and construction experts who will work on the project.

Once this is complete the project enters the construction phase. During this stage, Kulvir will be involved in site meetings and visits, overseeing the construction, negotiating with contractors, resolving any issues that arise and signing off on pieces of work.

Hobbies and interest

Kulvir is also fascinated by history and loves to visit historical sites during his travels. Locations with exceptional architecture are his favourite destinations to head to for either work or pleasure. As well as the Yucatan Peninsula, he is also a frequent visitor to India’s Golden Triangle, St Petersburg, Budapest, Istanbul, Hanoi, Egypt and London.

Topping Kulvir’s list of the world’s best architecture is Singapore’s Gardens by the Bay, but coming in a close second are the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. These buildings rank among the tallest in the world and are a spectacular display of glass and steel, offering panoramic views of the surrounding city.

Kulvir is a keen cook and enjoys immersing himself in the culture of the countries he visits by trying the cuisines of the region and the local specialities on offer. He likes to cycle and takes the opportunity to hire a bike in every city he visits to better explore the local area.
