Welcome!
This is the blog of the freelance architect Kulvir Singh Virk, who has been working within the industry for the past 25 years. This blog will explore various aspects of Kulvir’s career as well as a range of topics covering his other great loves: world travel, biking, cooking and trying different cuisines from around the globe.
Travel
Kulvir particularly enjoys visiting countries that boast interesting, notable or spectacular architecture, and, to this end, he relishes visiting Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, which is rich in fascinatingly designed buildings of contemporary and historical origin.
For example, the Cathedral de Merida at Plaza Grande was constructed in the late 16th century and was the first cathedral to be completed on the mainland of America. The site is one of Merida’s foremost tourist attractions, and architects like Kulvir are particularly interested in the intricate designs that can still be seen on the building’s façade. In terms of contemporary architecture, the design of the Mayan World Museum of Merida’s main building is awe-inspiring and based on the ceiba tree – Mayans considered this tree to be sacred.

Architectural design in the world
For Kulvir, Gardens by the Bay in Singapore offers some of the very best examples of modern architectural design in the world. Each parabolic conservatory, constructed of glass and steel, houses different climates; this means that visitors can go between the structures to experience, for example, a flower meadow followed by a misty mountain forest. In 2012, Gardens by the Bay was named Building of the Year at the World Architecture Festival.
As a freelance architect, Kulvir is able to work all over the world, something that he likes to combine with his love of cycling. Of all the locations he has explored by bike, Perth, Australia, remains a personal favourite. The city is replete with cycle paths and bike lanes, and it is also the starting point of the Kep Track, a magnificent route that utilises former rail lines to take riders through the bush for a total of 47 miles.
Traveling Food
Also linked to his passion for travel is Kulvir’s appreciation of food and desire to try the cuisines of the countries he visits. After a visit to Russia, Kulvir developed a love of Russian dishes, and he now regularly cooks blini (Russian pancakes), borscht (beetroot soup) and pirozhki (small puff pastries that are baked or fried) for grateful family members and friends.
